In Stoughton District Court on Wednesday, Read, 41, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision as fresh information in the case emerged.
Read and O’Keefe, who was off-duty, had gone to two pubs early Saturday morning before leaving for a residence on Fairview Road in Canton, according to the prosecution.
Read told detectives that she dropped O’Keefe off at 12:45 a.m., performed a three-point turn, and drove away, but that she did not see him walk inside the residence.
Read is also supposed to have claimed he was hit by a plow. They and another lady discovered O’Keefe in the snow, with wounds on his arm, swollen eyes, and nose and mouth bleeding.
At 6:04 a.m., they dialed 911 and began CPR. O’Keefe was sent to Good Samaritan Hospital and pronounced dead there.
The cop also suffered several skull fractures and hypothermia, according to the medical examiner.
Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz issued a statement in which he expressed his condolences to Officer O’Keefe’s family.
On Twitter, he stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased officer, his family, and the entire Boston Police Department.”
An autopsy was done on Monday, but did not “yield information acceptable for publication at this time,” according to the District Attorney’s Office, which informed ABC station WCVB.
The DA’s office also said that the cause of death was still unknown.
