On May 16, 1955, Olga Valentinovna Korbut was born. She used to compete for the Soviet Union as a gymnast.
She was known as the “Sparrow from Minsk” and earned four gold medals and two silver medals for the Soviet team in the Summer Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976.
Likewise, she was also the first inductee into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1988.
On January 16, a Reddit member known as u/PumpedPrivacy shared a flashback video of the gymnast completing the notorious ‘dead loop’ flip, also known as the Korbut flip on Reddit went viral.
Olga received a 9.8 out of ten for her performance. The Code of Points later prohibited standing on the high bar due to the danger involved. The Korbut flip had come to an end.

Why Was Olga Korbut “Death Loop” Banned?
According to the New York Daily News, the ‘death loop,’ also known as the Korbut Flip, was forbidden due to the high amount of risk involved.
Standing on a high bar, performing a backflip, then re-grasping the bar was how the dead loop was made. Olga, who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1972 Munich Olympics, was the first and last person to do so.

Olga told the Associated Press: “This is Olympic history, and I want to share it with the entire world.”
She further elaborated, “They were instrumental in making history and ensuring that it would carry on in perpetuity. This is how I intended to communicate with the public.”
