A South Carolina man who was serving a 50-year sentence for the murder of an adolescent girl has died in prison.
Stephen Ross Kelly, 29, was discovered dead in his cell at Lee Correctional Institution on Saturday morning, according to a spokeswoman for the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).
Since February 7, he had been receiving treatment for the illness at the Bishopville facility. In 2015, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews stated. “This guy had a problem with women’s wrath. He savagely assaulted his girlfriend, and he savagely beat Briana before rapping her.”

Kelly was found guilty in February 2014 of murdering 18-year-old Briana Rabon in Kershaw County.
Kelly allegedly strangled Rabon and dumped her corpse in a forested location, according to prosecutors and detectives. Stephen was sentenced to 50 years in prison for his crime in September 2015.
Rabon’s corpse was discovered on February 26, 2014, behind the Haig’s Creek neighborhood in Elgin, shortly after her car was found at a nearby Huddle House, according to The State.
Her corpse was discovered by children who were playing in the vicinity.
Kelly had a criminal history. He had been released on probation a few months before murdering Rabon after serving a little over four months in prison for receiving stolen items worth more than $10,000.
According to Rabon’s obituary, she was born in Camden and graduated from Lugoff-Elgin High School in 2013. Rabon worked as a hostess at the Texas Roadhouse and the now-closed Tilted Kilt in Harbison at the time of her death.
Her funeral was attended by about 1,000 people at Sawney’s Creek Baptist Church in Fairfield County.
Savannah Locke, one of Rabon’s greatest friends throughout high school, recalled in 2015, “She was so joyful and always positive. Briana didn’t care what other people thought of her, and she was the best friend someone could have. To be her buddy, you didn’t have to dress a certain way, have a specific amount of money, or be anything.”

Kelly had been treated for COVID-19 since February 7, according to SCDC Director of Communications Chrysti Shain. The fatality is being investigated by the SCDC’s Office of Investigations and Intelligence.
According to the statement, no cause of death has been determined. Still, the South Carolina Department of Corrections’ Office of Investigations and Intelligence is investigating, and an autopsy will be done.
According to prison authorities, there have been 5,319 confirmed coronavirus cases among inmates in the 21 facilities run by the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
As per Department of Corrections data, 508 convicts are still active COVID-19 patients, despite the fact that 4,751 have recovered.
Prison officials said, 505 of the convicts at Lee Correctional have been vaccinated, while 714 others have rejected the vaccine.
