Mathai was a sportscaster for the NBC Bay Area (1998-2010) before his News career. In 1995, when he started at KYMA, he became the first Indian sportscaster for a network affiliate in the United States. He worked for KNSD NBC affiliates in San Diego, KYMA in Yuma, AZ, and KSEE in Fresno, CA before arriving at KNTV in 1998.
