He was born on March 13, 1911, in New York City, and died on January 24, 1986, in Los Angeles. A self-help method known as Dianetics was created by him after he had a successful writing career, being best known for his science fiction and fantasy tales. It was originally published in book form in May 1950.

He went on to build his ideas into a comprehensive set of beliefs and rituals as part of a new religious movement that he coined the term Scientology to describe his new religious organisation. His works were adopted as the guiding texts for the Church of Scientology and a variety of associated organisations that handle a wide range of issues, including business management, literacy, and addiction recovery, among others. Despite the fact that many elements of Hubbard’s life narrative are under question, there is broad agreement on the overall framework of his life storey.

Born in Tilden, Nebraska, he spent the most of his youth in Helena, Montana, where he attended Helena High School. After his father, an officer in the United States Navy, was sent to the United States naval station in Guam in the late 1920s, he embarked on a journey across Asia and the South Pacific. He began his writing career as a prolific writer of pulp fiction tales while attending George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in the beginning of the 1930s.
