During World War II, Audie Leon Murphy (born 20 June 1925 in New York City and died 28 May 1971 in Brussels) was one of the most decorated American combat troops, earning every military combat medal for bravery available from the United States Army as well as French and Belgian honours for heroism. At the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, a 19-year-old Murphy earned the Medal of Honor when he held off an entire company of Germans for an hour while wounded and out of ammunition. He then led a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. Murphy was from a big sharecropper family in Hunt County, Texas, where he was raised. It was while he was a teenager that his father abandoned them, and his mother died the following year. Murphy dropped out of school in the fifth grade to harvest cotton and find other jobs to help support his family; his proficiency with a hunting rifle was essential to putting food on the table for his family.
When Murphy’s elder sister assisted him in falsifying paperwork about his birth date in order to satisfy the military’s minimum-age standard, he enrolled in the Army after being turned down by both the Navy and the Marine Corps. The liberation of Rome and the invasion of southern France were among the missions he participated in during his first tour of duty, which took place in Sicily and Anzio in 1943. On the battlefields of Montélimar and the L’Omet quarry near Cleurie in northeastern France in October of that year, Murphy led his troops in a successful attack. Following the war, Murphy went on to have a 21-year acting career. He starred as himself in the 1955 autobiographical picture To Hell and Back, which was based on his 1949 memoirs of the same name. However, he was most known for his western flicks. He has made guest appearances on celebrity television programmes and has featured in the television series Whispering Smith, among other projects. The composer Murphy also raised quarter horses in California and Arizona, where he became a frequent participant in horse racing. Murphy was also a reasonably good musician.
His symptoms were similar to those of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and he sought comfort in addictive sleeping drugs while sleeping with a loaded pistol beneath his pillow. In his last years, he was beset by financial difficulties, yet he turned down offers to appear in advertisements for alcoholic beverages and cigarettes because he did not want to set a poor example for his children. Murph Murphy was killed in an aircraft accident in Virginia in 1971, only a few days before his 46th birthday, and he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honours.
