Hurley, Sr. (born July 31, 1947) is a basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hurley is the son of Robert Matthew Hurley, Sr. Hurley has accumulated 25 state titles and more over 1000 victories throughout his 39-year coaching career. Hurley became the ninth coach in high school history to win 1000 games when he achieved this feat on February 2, 2011. Five of his teams have gone unbeaten in their respective seasons, including his 2007–08 squad. The announcement that he would be the only coach elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame that year, and just the third high school coach in history, was made on April 5, 2010. He was officially inducted into the Hall of Fame on August 13, 2010. His sons are Bobby Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke who is now the head basketball coach at the University of Buffalo, and Dan Hurley, who was hired as the head basketball coach at the University of Rhode Island in February 2012 after two years as an assistant coach at Wagner College and nine years as a high school basketball coach at Newark-based Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School, which is also regarded as one of the nation’s top high school programmes.
